Piscobamba River Watershed Sovereign Bioregion Project

Vilcabamba is a valley full of magical places and a tradition of longevity among its people. Today, it has become a hub for expats seeking a community off the grid—yet its original inhabitants maintain a deep cultural connection to natural farming and respect for the environment.

The objective of the Piscobamba River Watershed Sovereign Bioregion Project is to create a regenerative and sovereign watershed in the Vilcabamba area—revitalizing the local economy and moving toward self-sufficiency.

How? Through:

  • Community entrepreneurship and innovation

  • Holistic and organic farming practices

  • A native seed bank

  • A comprehensive recycling program

  • Integrative physical and mental health services

  • Rainwater harvesting and conservation

  • Ecological sewage treatment

  • Natural and sustainable construction

  • Microcredit and a local community token

  • Community-based tourism

  • Local renewable energy generation

I am involved in this project thanks to my long-standing relationship with Walter Moora and Susan Davis from Kinship Earth, who have been actively promoting the idea of creating a bioregion in this area. I have now become one of its most fervent advocates. I believe that bioregionalism is the answer to globalism and extractive industries—and that makes it a powerful solution to the world’s problems.
