Learning alongside original inhabitants
Ecuador is a megadiverse country, but many expats living in Ecuador —and many Ecuadorians—avoid traveling beyond familiar routes. Concerns about safety, crowds, and superficial experiences keep people from exploring deeper.
Community-managed tourism offers another path:
• Direct connection with territory and its caretakers
• Small-scale experiences that support rural families
• Access to places that remain outside mass tourism circuits
This model emerged from indigenous organizing in the 1990s. Today it sustains over 200 communities across Ecuador—not as a product, but as an expression of territorial sovereignty.
